Queen Mary Hauntings

March 8, 2010

Last Wednesday, I finally was able to visit the infamous Queen Mary Hotel, a war-time luxury liner permanently moored in Long Beach, California. The ship has a long history of hauntings and paranormal sightings. Surprisingly to me, I was able to roam freely around the ship, exploring the lower levels of the ship’s hull and areas that have garnered the most reputation for sightings.

One area in particular, Shaft Alley, was the site of a tragedy involving an eighteen year-old shipmate, John Pedder, who was crushed to death in a watertight door as he tried to slip past it during a routine drill on July 10, 1966. Numerous tour guides and visitors have described witnessing apparitions of a bearded man dressed in overalls within the dark hallways of Shaft Alley.

TheĀ  guard claims his dog went wild with fear and would not go past the door leading into Shaft Alley. The guard then heard a “metallic” rolling sound that seemed to be coming towards at a great speed. The sound got so loud that the guard fled in terror. The door is no longer in place, and there is an escalator where it once stood.

Another tour guide claimed that while riding the escalator in Shaft Alley, she noticed a darkly clad figure behind her. He disappeared when she turned away. She was later able to identify him as Pedder from photos.

The Queen Mary’s first class swimming pool is reportedly a hot spot for paranormal activity. Some reports claim that it is haunted by the ghost of people who drowned in the pool. The ghosts seen in the first class swimming pool seem to be exclusively female. There are reports of at least one adult woman and a little girl that haunt this location. The little girl is said to have drowned in the second class swimming pool (which has since been removed). Her name is reported to be “Jackie,” and she is seen in many places across the ship.

The changing rooms at the back of the swimming pool are said to hold a vortex of negative energy, or perhaps a gateway between dimensions. One story suggests that this is due to a woman having been raped in the changing rooms at one point. There is a live ghost web cam that continuously films the swimming pool.

Attached are a few video shots I had taken during my trip revealing the eerie changing rooms at the front of the pool and other haunted locations.
